Police Interrogations

Michael was taken to the Police Station and Inv. Todd McCurdy . refused to let him call his family. He had already been told that Michael had an attorney who would be down to the station, but Inv. McCurdy . kept trying to interrogate Mike. Mike kept saying that he wanted to call his attorney but didn’t know the number off hand, although he knew his mother would. . Inv. McCurdy . kept badgering Mike and trying to force him to talk to him. Also, noteworthy is that Michael was never given his Mirandi Rights, as no one in the police department could find the Mirandi Rights form that he should have signed while in custody. Inv. T. McCurdy lied that Michael had consented to speak to him and that he had denied having a girl in his car the night before. When asked about Mike’s tape-recorded statements, Inv. T. M. stated that his recorder malfunctioned and he was not able to record Mike. Yet Inv. McCurdy was able to successfully tape record the statements of Brian Moon, Dimitrioius Dalkatalitis, Hallie McKeithan and Lindsey Bryant. Not having a recorded statement allowed Inv. T. M. to put his own spin on the matter. He did not record the statement, as he had nothing to record.

Jason Campbell, Mike’s friend, was questioned by Inv. Todd McCurdy and again the tape recorder malfunctioned. Inv. McCurdy told Jason that he had been implicated in a sex crime, knowing that Jason was on probation and afraid of the consequences. So he attempted to get Jason . to provide damaging testimony about Mike that apparently he wrote and had Jason scribble his name., Jason . vehemently denies knowing or saying what was on the police report. Jason said that he did not remember anything and certainly doesn’t remember signing anything, as he was hungover from the night before. Interesting that on the report where Jason . speaks about what happened, there is an X by the signature line as if someone was making sure that a signature was put in the correct place. None of the police reports for the other witnesses had an X to mark the spot. .

Luckily, Jason was released from custody and has gone on to receive not only a bachelor’s degree but a master’s from FAMU and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in business.

Sexual Crimes Investigator Sandra Harrison was put in charge of the case initially, as it was a sexual crime. However, after the blood and urine test came back showing the plethora of drugs in Lindsey’s system, Investigator Harrison confronted Lindsey and was then taken off the case and Inv. Todd McCurdy of Homicide put in charge of it. The blood and urine test showed that she had 8 drugs in her system, Marijuana, Cocaine, Ecstasy, Xanax, Vicodin, Oxycontin, etc. all combined to make up what is called “Sexual Enhancement Drugs” for young people to experience sexual highs longer. Lindsey testified that she takes the drugs for recreational use and that Mike did not give her any of the drugs.

In court, Inv. McCurdy . lied under oath swearing he had not been told that Mike had an attorney. He also said that Mike denied having a girl in the car with him the night before. He went on to testify about what he claims Mike said. . He then stated that he was not able to record the statements because his tape recorder malfunctioned on Mike and Jason. ( It is interesting that the Judge did not press him for why he was not able to audio tape critical pieces of information for court. Months later it would be revealed by others that this is routine for TPD to provide damaging testimony on black defendants under the guise of “the tape recorder malfunctioned.”
